Laboratory animals were raised by the need from human society. In Taiwan, people commonly recognize the significant contribution of experimental animals towards the pharmaceutical and biological industries, however, few are aware or suspicious of the aspect of ethics of the animal experiment. Not to mention to question the necessity and discuss the alternative ways to replace animal experiment. In this thesis, we try to uncover the truth behind the laboratory usage of animals and debate the ethical viewpoint of animal experiment. The literature part reviews the theory of animal rights, the current scope of animal experiment, the definition of experimental animal, the relation to the human society, and the relevant laws in Taiwan and foreign countries. In the highlight section, focus will be on the present situation of academic usage of experimental animals in Taiwan. We also discuss the necessity of animal experiment, and summarize the possible alternatives to animal experiment and the many efforts that have been done to minimize the pain of the laboratory animals. It is highly hoped that through this report, people, especially in Taiwan, can be well aware of the problem of experimental animals and their rights to be pain- and fear-free. When conducting such animal experiments for the alleged purpose of human benefits, the rights of the animals and necessity should be also brought into consideration, so as to minimize the pains and death of the laboratory animals.
