兔腦炎微孢子蟲(Encephalitozoon cuniculi)是一個普遍感染兔子的微孢子寄生蟲,它也會造成人類腦炎孢子蟲症。目前在台灣尚未有文獻報導,然而在臨床寵物兔病例上有許多疑似感染兔腦炎微孢子蟲症的病例。因此,本論文的目的是在確認台灣地區兔腦炎微孢子蟲的感染病例,進而利用碳分子免疫分析法(Carbon immunoassay; CIA)和酵素免疫分析法(Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay; ELISA)來調查台灣兔腦炎微孢子蟲之血清陽性率。本研究在一隻具有典型兔腦炎微孢子蟲臨床症狀的兔子,利用組織病理學、組織免疫化學染色法和聚合酶連鎖反應證明了台灣的第一個兔腦炎微孢子蟲感染的病例。在血清學研究方面,171個樣本之碳分子免疫分析法和酵素免疫分析法其陽性率分別為63.2 %(108/171)和 67.8 %(116/171)。其中於14隻有神經症狀的病例中,發現有13隻為兔腦炎微孢子蟲之血清學檢查陽性,其陽性率為92.9 %。統計分析結果亦顯示兔子的性別和品種間在血清陽性率方面沒有明顯差異性;然而在年齡方面,大於4月齡的兔子則會有較高的血清陽性率及明顯的臨床症狀(p

Encephalitozoon cuniculi (E. cuniculi) is a microsporidian parasite that commonly infects rabbits and could infect human causing encephalitozoonosis. Encephalitozoonosis is not well document in Taiwan, although many pet rabbits are suspected infections at clinics. The aim of this study was conduct to diagnose the infection of E. cuniculi in rabbits in Taiwan, and further to survey the serology of E. cuniculi by carbon immunoassay (CIA) and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). A rabbit with typical clinical signs of encephalitozoonosis and seropositive against E. cuniculi was firstly confirmed E. cuniculi infection in Taiwan through histopathological examinations, immunohistological chemistry stain, and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Furthermore, the PCR product has a high sequence homology to that of E. cuniculi from NCBI GeneBank database. Serological examination of 171 rabbits found that 63.2% (108/171) and 67.8 % (116/171) seropositive against E. cuniculi diagnosed by CIA and ELISA respectively. Moreover, thirteen of the 14 rabbits (92.9%) with neurological symptoms were seropositive. The results of the statistical analysis showed that gender and breed had no significant effect on E. cuniculi seropositivity (P > 0.05); however, rabbits older than 4 months had a seropositivity for E. cuniculi significantly higher than that of adult rabbits aged older than 4 months (P
