This study investigates a total of 101 animal stories in ten volumes of Chen Shih-Hsi’s works that published by the Jiangsu Juveniles & Children’s Publishing House. These stories include: “Hsiang Mu Yuan”, “Hung Nai Yang”, “Chi Gai Hu”, “Tsan Lang Hui Man”, “Mixed Blooded Wolf”, “Tales of the Wild Ox’s Marvels”, “Yun Bau Bu Ha Yi”, “The Blind Child and the Forsaken Dog”, “Being the Raven’s Neighbor”, and “The Hunting Vulture’s Troubles”. The meanings behind the bloody violence in Chen Shih-Hsi’s animal novels were investigated using Liu Hsu Yuan’s viewpoint on love themes. The researcher divided love into three aspects: parental love, romantic love, and friendly love and reached the conclusions stated below: I.) Parental Love versus Utility: 1.) The growth of young animal children must not be without mothers. 2.) The elimination of the inferior and the remaining of the good is one way that types of animals are protected. 3.) In order to protect young children, parents can sacrifice their own lives in exchange. II.) Romantic Love versus Utility: 1.) Those with beautiful physiques as well as brave and fierce warriors are always the victors in the battlefield of love. 2.) The male animal with an ugly face must have a level headed and wise mind in order to win the favor of the female animals. 3.) In order to pursue eternal love, he can sacrifice his own life. III.) Mutual Assistance versus Struggle: 1.) When animals live in a clan, they can abandon previous suspicions and realize united cooperation. 2.) The competition for power amongst animals will necessarily be bloody before there can be stability. 3.) There exists “A Condition of Collective Life” between different clans.
